David William Long, 66, of Southwest Greensburg, passed away Sunday, August 31, 2025, with his wife and children by his side. He was born on September 27, 1958, in Greensburg, to his late parents, William T. and Gerry (Young) Long. He was a 1976 graduate of Greensburg Salem High School.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Cindy (Love) Long; children, Leslie Fink (Justin), and Steven Long (Stefanie); grandchildren, Jack and Caleb Fink, and Delaney and Molly Long; a sister, Carolyn Long Schleicher (Don); father-in-law, Jack Love; sister-in-law, Angela Love; nephews and niece, Chris and Jeff Schleicher, and Colton and Ellory Love; several great nieces and great nephews; and his beloved pet, AJ.
David was a lifelong teamster Local No. 30, working 49 years at Charley Brothers Supervalu, now Unfi, retiring in January 2025. He was a member of St. Paul Parish, Greensburg. He was a lifetime member of Southwest Greensburg Volunteer Fire Department, a past social member of Greensburg Volunteer Fire Department Truck Company No. 2, Hilltop Social Club, and Four Seasons Brewery. He was a tough competitor and played softball for Southwest Greensburg and Greensburg VFD No. 2. He challenged anyone to hit farther than he could.
David was an avid golfer, always trying to beat his father-in-law, and succeeding to achieve what few golfers ever can – a hole in one on par four, number 9 at Norvelt Golf Club. He played in the Tuesday golf league at Mount Odin two weeks before his passing when the pain robbed him of his game.
His greatest achievements didn’t come from money or fame. David was a hard worker never logging one day of unemployment. He was a loving husband and an awesome dad. He made the best pancakes, played video games, and was caught by a newspaper photographer riding bikes with the kids on a beautiful February afternoon when Leslie was absent from school sick with chickenpox.
His heart melted when his grandchildren called him “Pappy Dave”. Whether it was watching basketball, soccer, dance recitals, or swimming and doing flips in the pool at home, nothing ever made him happier than his grandchildren.
He enjoyed “Thirsty Thursday” in Gary’s garage with the best lifelong friends anyone could ever have. He never spoke a sour word, except when it came to Mike Tomlin’s coaching abilities. David will always be remembered for his quick humor, many opinions, his smile, and laugh so hearty he shook. He will be sadly missed by all who loved him. His wit, charm, and blue eyes will live on in his children and grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 4 to 8 PM Wednesday at the LEO M. BACHA FUNERAL HOME, INC., 516 Stanton Street, Greensburg. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 AM Thursday in St. Paul Parish, 820 Carbon Rd., Greensburg. Please go directly to the church. Interment will follow in Westmoreland County Memorial Park.
